Look First to End Seals to Resolve Coating Leaks and Save Money
In an enclosed chamber doctor blade system, the job of the end seal is to keep the coating from leaking out of the end of the chamber. If used correctly, this inexpensive consumable will ensure coating quality and save you thousands of dollars in excessive coating consumption, accelerated doctor blade wear and anilox scoring.
When a press operator is experiencing coating leaks, his first inclination is to move the chamber closer to the anilox roll and increase the pressure of the doctor blade against the roll. This can lead to excessive doctor blade wear and damage to the anilox roll. Instead, choosing the correct end seals and replacing them when necessary will usually prevent coating leaks. Having a good seal at the ends of the chamber will allow for proper doctor blade seating and a predictable and even transfer of coating from the anilox roll to the blanket.
It is important to contact your end seal supplier for expert advice on choosing the correct end seals for your application and to find out when to replace these often-overlooked, inexpensive consumable parts.
